Inscription & Translations
[Inmatur]a quidem iu-
venes for[tu]na peremit
sed [pi]e(t)as [m]atris con-
[didit]ossua rogis.
Apparatus
l.1 [Inmatur]a orig., reg. Immatura
Text follows IDR.
l. 1: iuvenes, Bücheler, Paulovics; iuvenem Lommatzsch
l. 3: pietas, Krummrey; ATAS, Daicoviciu; ILIA, Paulovics; MEAS, Gurzó.
The epitaph also presents the archaic form “inmatura” , the classical form being “immatura”. This is an expression (“inmatura fortuna”) which shows how deeply ingrained Roman culture is at this time in such a remote part of the Empire.
Fischer suggested omitting “quidem” in the translation being of the opinion that it is unecessary.
Main Translation
| Translation | “A premature destiny kidnapped them as they were still young, but the love of their mother collected their remains in the graves. The two brothers [—] and Aurelius Iulianus who lived [—] years ,their mother Aurelia Procula [—]”. |
