Gaius Aebutius Tardus and Gaius Aebutius Verecundus, his son, soldier of the 6th legion in Syria.
“And already now my life has completed 18 years,
the Fates have ruptured the passage of my life suddenly; I am wretched.”
“You were chosen to be a soldier, you who was pious and bravely bore arms in Syria, which the Sixth Legion occupied,
And Fortune exercised excessively savage rages,
so that she is the one who, in this way, rapidly seized him before his day.”
“And lest anyone, in my prayers to my parents thus far, shall not relay the splendid deeds of my military service.O wretched parents who begot one such as me!
I was not allowed to hold onto fatherly embraces.
You, my wretched mother, you who lament that you have been deserted in this way, for a ruin lies fallen in the death of a father.”
“I did not forget you, my heart and grief,
I am angry that you, wretched one, were not allowed to enjoy
the sweet embraces and kisses given by a dying man, nor did he hold you with his failing hand.
He went up to the land of the gods above, if there is a road and entrance to there when a tomb has been built: let my death be visible for all time.”
“My empty, unlucky [body] occupies [the land] under foreign skies, nor did anyone close my eyes, no one my hands.
Guest, passing by, do not forsake my inscription
and I pray that you shall say, “may the earth be light for you”.”
Valeria Laura gave this lavishly. (English, Faithful, P., War and Peace. Military Lives and Identities in Latin Verse Inscriptions, p. 655f)
