Decoration

Decoration and Iconography Stele topped by moulded tympanum with acroteria on top and right end. On pediment, relief of genius holding a torch. Beneath the tympanum, ll. 1-2 inscribed within tabula ansata. Below the tabula, portrait of woman wearing a stola and palla, lying asleep on kline with her left arm stretched over her head. Ll. 3-10 inscribed under the portrait, on epigraphica field.

Scandilia Pamphila, freedwoman of Caius, lies here to rest.

Stranger, do not wonder why you are seeing me like this, lying, sleeping in this bed. I am dead ... you think I am sleeping ... devoted and dear to her daughters ... I rejoice, since ... I saw my daughters ...

Further Information

Comment

A dating of the inscription remains uncertain, broadly within the early imperial period, as suggested by Ehmig and Haensch (LIA). Cugusi and Sblendorio Cugusi and Cugusi (CLE) hypothesise a dating to the 3rd century AD alone.
