Main Translation

Translation Within frame:
Antonius Pax, while still alive as a man, dedicated this altar to himself. He was born in this land, was a merchant, and had a wife and children. He had to sail to carry out his job. He came back to his homeland and kept close to this sacred altar.

Sacred to the Manes. Antonius Pax lived (Bottom of frame:) for seventy years. He lies here.

Plinth:
... Sambucus.

Further Information

Comment

Dating based on the formulae D(is) M(anibus) s(acrum), v(ixit) a(nnis) and h(ic) s(itus) e(st) (following Lassère). Cholodniak proposes a narrower dating to the 3rd century AD.
