Main Translation
| Translation | To the Spirits of the Departed and to the Eternal Security, here... is always... having lamented laments ... Claudius by name, his parents laid him in this bed. His praenomen was Aurelius, his nomen was Claudius. He was a real veteran after 18 years. Suddenly, the fate has taken me away in the darkness of death, and, childless, I have left as heirs my foster sons, and, soon after death, I give account for my life. And now I wish that this stone may make my everlasting home peaceful and me unharmed. Piously and as heir Hermes placed the (funerary) inscription on the grave for his patron, as a sign of honour. |

To the spirits of the departed and perpetual safety. Here [...]
[...] is always, whom [...]
the complaint, about which he was complaining, and [...] also [...]
he had been chosen (?) [...]. He was called Claudius, he whom his parents laid in state in the bloom [of youth]. His praenomen was Aurelius, and his nomen
Claudius. Indeed, he was an unerring veteran
of the Legio XI Claudia, and, in his eightieth year, suddenly
the Fates seized him into the Underworld. It is also right
that, because I went back with no children, I am only going to restore
my alumni and my heirs [their freedom] after my death.
Now I hope for a consideration of my vine stick so that, here,
the stone, my eternal abode, will be peaceful and keep me safe.
His pious heir Hermes put up this inscription for his patron, honouring him on his tomb. (Latin, Faithful, P., War and Peace. Military Lives and Identities in Latin Verse Inscriptions, p. 657.)
