| Translation |
To Murra and Verecundus, sons of Murranus. You who read, read to the end these dying words of a young boy and bestow tears and groans on my death. I Murra, reproducing the first part of my father's name, to my mother's joy resembled both parents. My age had shown fourteen years to me, and the repute of my chastity was now well-established, when suddenly sport (treacherous, alas) and the arm of a playmate intending no harm caused my death. For a training javelin carelessly thrown, not intended to kill me, hit and penetrated my tender head. Refrain from vexing my spirit with your grief, my parents, smitten by another blow before this (?); you have hardly laid aside grief at the death of another son (?); you (my brother,) lie buried in the tenth month of your fourth year ....; an urn is sufficient for my bones. |

Llevando la primera parte del nombre de mi padre, Murra, tuve el aspecto físico de mis dos progenitores, gracias a mi madre. Mi vida duró catorce años y ya mi conducta intachable había alcanzado una gran fama, cuando de repente, joh traición! fuiste la causa de mi muerte, una simple diversión procedente de la mano de un amigo. Pues un clavo lanzado io con imprudencia, sin intención de matarme, se me clavó y se introdujo en mi cabeza de niño. [Vosotros], queridos padres, que fuisteis antes golpeados por una herida [semejante], dejad de molestar con vuestro llanto a mis manes, [que] enterrasteis junto a [otro] hijo: tú, mi hermano, yaces enterrado a los tres años y diez meses, [a quien los dioses] llamaron [hacia sus lugares de reposo] libres de [preocupaciones].
