| Translation | As long as you are healthy, have possessions, and have food, you will have many friends. If, by chance, your star leads you on a different course, either you become part of a brethren here in Rome, or you will be abroad and invite for your birthday those you did not know as friends. The sick man will know men he could not know when healthy. The gate tests men, there is the last balance of life. Look how everyone avoids funerals as much as possible; there loyalty and who is a friend become manifest. Who behaves kindly towards who is absent, that shall be ... friend. |

Si tú a los amigos no notas, reconoce el enfermo a los hombres que sano no pudo. La Puerta los prueba; allí está Ia balanza final de Ia vida. Ya los ves: cada cual como puede se libran de entierros; queda clara allí Ia piedad y quién es amigo. Quien trata bien al ausente, será él su amigo. (Spanish, M. Rodríguez-Pantoja, 1994)
- Mientras estés bien de salud, tengas posesiones y comas bien, tendrás muchos amigos, y si de otro modo por alguna circunstancia el destino lo dispone, serás un parásito tanto en Roma como fuera de allí. ¿Y encima los invitas a tus cumpleaños? ¿Para qué?
