Decoration

Decoration and Iconography Inscription within moulded frame, praescriptum inscribed on the top margin, ll. 24-25 on the bottom margin. Frame standing on a pedestal. Above the frame is a pulvinus on top of which stands a semi-circular cornice (fragmented on the left-hand side) terminating in a rosette on he right-hand side and containing a garland carved on the tympanum.

Metrical division in iambic senarii follows C. Brakman 1927, though it remains uncertain. A mix of iambic senarii and dactylic rhythm has been hypothesised by F. Bücheler in CLE and reprised by De Groot 1926.

Sacred to the Manes.

Within frame:
We, Maximus and Lascivus, two brothers in great harmony, have put here this epitaph when we were living, so that we could live a serene life on earth until Fate had wished so. We lived our life in unison and never pronounced harsh words to each other. We followed our passions and have never refused anything to our existence. So you, who are reading, live a good life, my friend. Why? After death, there will be no laughter, no cheerfulness, nor any pleasure. Farewell, Maximus!

Remember what you read, for life gets closer to death every day. Farewell!

Comment

Dating proposed by M. Buonocore in CIL 09. A different dating to the mid-5th century A.D. is proposed by C. Brakman 1927 due to manuscript tradition, though this is unlikely.
