Comment

Lettich claims that these two fragments belonged to the limestone base of a monument erected in honor of C. Sempronius Tuditanus, consul in 129 BC. In the same year, Tuditanus conducted a victorious campaign against the Istrians, Taurisci, and Iapodes, advancing as far as the River Titium (modern-day Krka), where he celebrated his triumph. The inscription was probably composed shortly after his triumph (Lettich 2003). C. Sempronius Tuditanus campaigns in 129 B.C., as indicated by Morgan, are also mentioned in the third voume of Pliny the Elder's Naturalis Historia, where Pliny reports that "Tuditanus qui domuit Ilisiros in statua sua ibi inscripsit: ab Aquileia ad Tityum flumen stadia M" (Morgan 1973). There is an ongoing debate concerning whether this fragmentary inscription could be associated to the one mentioned by Pliny, perhaps located at the base of the statue erected by C. Sempronius Tuditanus (Morgan 1973, Kruschwitz 2002). Questions regarding the location and purpose of the statue erected by Tuditanus mentioned in Pliny's also remain open (Morgan 1973). Morgan however reports that another fragmentary inscription bearing the name of C. Sempronius Tuditanus in the nominative was found in Duino in 1924 (AE 1926, 105 = EDR072993), and she argues that the use of nominative seems to suggest that this was the original text transcribed by Pliny (Morgan 1973). According to Morgan the use of the nominative could also be an indicator of the fact that the inscription may have contained a more detailed account of C. Sempronius Tuditanus’ victories and might have been located at the base of a statue representing him, which could be the same statue mentioned by Pliny (Morgan 1973). Another open question also pertains the original location of the two fragments found respectively in località Monastero (a) and Cervignano (b) and of the third fragment found in Duino. Regarding the first two fragments, Masaro suggests that both may have come from Località Monastero, near Aquileia, which is attested as one of the earliest locations for the cult of the deified river Timavo, perhaps from a nearby temple or from a votive altar dedicated to Timavo (Masaro 2017). Chiabà and Masaro believe that the inscription found in secondary use in the castle of Duino in 1924, lost ten years later due to acts of vandalism, likely came from the nearby sanctuary of Fons Timavi, located at the mouth of the river where the modern S. Giovanni in Tuba is situated (Chiabà 2013, Masaro 2017). Accordig to Chiabà, the material of the three fragments, as well as the different origins, seems to confirm that the fragment from Duino belonged to a different monument from the other two (Chiabà 1973). The view that the inscription was composed in saturnian verses was first reported by Dessau and Bücheler and it is now widely accepted (Kruschwitz 2002).
