Decoration

Decoration and Iconography The base is decorated with a high smooth moulding. Above it, on the front side, in the pediment, is located the carved text, placed within a decorative frame. The top of the altar is decorated with a bas relief within a recessed panel representing the four muses with Apollo between two crved rosettes. The relief is arranged from left to right as follows: Urania, the muse of astronomy, is represented wearing a chiton and a mantle and holding a globe with her left hand; Melpomene, the Muse of tragedy, is represented wearing a chiton, and a mantle and cothurni and holding a laurel branch with her right hand and a tragic mask in the left one; Apollo, god of music, poetry, and the arts, wears a himation and a crown and he is holding the lyre, placed on a stele, with his left arm; Thalia, the Muse of comedy, wears an unbelted garment and a mantle, and holds a comic mask with her right hand and a pedum, a curved sheperd's staff, with the left one; Clio, the Muse of history, is dressed like Urania and is carrying a scroll in the right hand and a wreath in the left one (Amelung 1903). On the left side of the altar there is a carved urceus and on the right a patera (EDR112710).
