Main Translation

Translation Marius Vitalis, her husband, centurion of a legion, and Marius Nigidianus, her son, a quaestor, [made this] for Virginia.
For a mother brought from a remote land and buried here.
She lived for six and thirty years. She was blameless to her husband, rare in her obedience, content with only her husband.

Further Information

Comment

The specified period of 36 years probably refers to the length of the marriage rather than the age of the deceased. Line 1: According to Burnand, the name is most likely to be Verginia or Virginia. It is possible that there was another part of the inscription on the lid with the formula D(is) M(anibus). (EDH)
