Μένανδρος. ἔχρῆν μὲν στῆσαι σὺν Ἔρωτι φίλῳ σε, Μένανδρε, ᾧ σὺν ζῶν ἐτέλεις ὄργια τερπνὰ θεοῦ· δῆλος δὲ εἶ φορέων αἰεὶ θεόν, ὁππότε καὶ νῦν σὴν μορφὴν κατιδὼν αὐτίκα πᾶς σε φιλεῖ. φαιδρὸν ἑταῖρον Ἔρωτος ὁρᾷς, Σειρῆνα θεάτρων, τόνδε Μένανδρον ἀεὶ κρᾶτα πυκαζόμενον· οὕνεκ’ ἄρ’ ἀνθρώπους ἱλαρὸν βίον ἐξεδίδαξα, ἡδύνας σκηνὴν δράμασι πᾶσι γάμων. οὐ φαύλως ἔστησα κατ’ ὀφθαλμούς σε, Μένανδρε, τῆσδέ γ’ Ὁμηρείης, φίλτατέ μοι, κεφαλῆς, ἀλλά σέ δεύτερα ἔταξε σοφὸς κρείνειν μετ’ ἐκεῖνον γραμματικὸς κλεινὸς πρόσθεν Ἀριστοφάνης.

Menandro. Si doveva erigere te, o Menandro, con il tuo caro Eros, con il quale vivendo tu compivi i dolci misteri del dio: tu porti chiaramente sempre con te il dio, poiché anche ora ciascuno, contemplando la tua immagine, subito ti ama. Tu vedi il lieto compagno di amore, la Sirena dei teatri, questo Menandro con il capo sempre cinto di corona: perché io insegnai agli uomini a vivere felicemente rallegrando la scena con rappresentazioni tutte nuziali. Non a caso io ti rizzai, o Menandro, di fronte a questo busto di Omero, o tu a me carissimo, ma decretò che tu ti aggiudicassi la seconda posizione dopo di lui Aristofane, saggio giudice e grammatico, un tempo dalla chiara fama.
