To the Manes of Annia Agathonice. A brief life is better than a long time for mortals, for this soul blossomed without guilt in only a little while, fulfilling twice ten years: she lived a happy life, her spirit shines here. But the wretched lifetime remaining for her parents torments their soul, and long enduring pains have been bestowed upon them. Grief is strengthened by their age, their affliction by lamentation, both being harsher than the destruction wrought by death. The affection of their loyal matron offers them relief, as much as the acres of soil which this grave sets apart.
A veces una vida breve es mejor para los mortales que un largo espacio de tiempo, pues no tardó mucho en florecer esta alma, muerta ahora a los veinte años, sin nada reprochahle en su conducta: tuvo una vida dichosa y su personalidad fue destacable. Pero la vida lamentable que les ha quedado a sus padres los atormenta en lo más profundo de su alma y un castigo prolongado, inacabable, se les ha dado: el dolor se refuerza por su edad avanzada y su propia decrepitud se agrava con el llanto, y una y otra cosa resultan más crueles que la destrucción que trae consigo la propia muerte. El cariño de su leal patrona les ofrece consuelo, tanto cuantas yugadas de tierra nos muestra esta tumba.
