Lucius Licinius Priscus et Fabia Euplia Lucio Licinio Severo filio pientissimo parentes. De genitore mihi domus Umbria, de genitrice Ostia: Tybris ibi vitreusvitrius, Nar hic cluit albus. Ille ego, qui vixi bis deno circite solis, flore genas tenero vernans et robore pollens, miles eram; sum deinde cinis de milite factus. Nec solum hoc, quia me rapuit fatum, male fecit: quod pater ac mater plangunt, hoc plus male fecit. FactumstFactum est, excessi: Spes et Fortuna valete; nihilnil amplius in me vobis per saeculasecula licebit: quod fuerat vestrum, amisi; quod erat meum hic est.

Lucius Licinius Priscus and Fabia Euplia, parents, for their most pious son, Lucius Licinius Severus. From my father home, for me, was Umbria, from my mother Ostia; there is glassy Tiber, here flows the white Nar. I, I am that man who lived for twenty rotations of the sun; blooming with the tender down of youth on my cheeks and strong in my vigour, I was a soldier. Then I, from a soldier, have been made into ashes. Not only was Fate wrong because it seized me, but because my father and mother lamented loudly, that made it even worse. It has passed, I have died. Hope and Fortune, farewell! Now you will not be allowed to do any more to me through the ages. What was yours, I have lost; what was mine, is here.
